Student Monitoring and Security
Please be aware that all student online activities (including all Google searches, all images/videos/files viewed, all files saved to Google Drive, all content entered into Google apps, etc) are constantly monitored.
Inappropriate behavior (including searching Google for anything inappropriate) is reported to school administration. School administrators will then meet with students and take appropriate disciplinary actions.
If a student accidentally arrives on a site of concern, they should immediately tell a teacher or parent/guardian (who will then let the school administration know) and close the offending site.
As a guardian, you have the ability to monitor your student's online activity as well. This is through a program called Lightspeed. You will receive an email asking you to set up an account, and once you have completed that step, you will be able to view websites your student visits during the day as well as being able to pause internet usage at home.

Digital Citizenship
Students will receive Digital Citizenship training throughout the school year. This training will reinforce online safety as well as ways to use digital resources make our community better, conduct respectful debate, shape public policy, and how to recognize the validity of online sources.

Student Devices
Students who have met the requirements will begin receiving their Chromebooks and chargers during their
first week of school. Chromebooks will be distributed to LPS students after:
-
Parent & student review this information covering basic rules, responsibilities, and expectations
-
Parent reviews & signs the LSS “Equipment Agreement Form” and the LSS “Student User Agreement
Parent / Guardian Permissions Form” in Skyward -
Students are STRONGLY ENCOURAGED to have and use a backpack with a padded area that can
hold a 12-inch laptop. Here are some examples: http://bit.ly/BPOPTIONS -
Parent pays the annual Chromebook maintenance fee ($50)
Parents are also encouraged to review all forms & seek clarification for any questions they have.
Acceptable Use
“Hacking” the Chromebook or Bypassing Security Measures
It is a violation of the Acceptable Use Policy to use applications or procedures that bypass or attempt to bypass LSS filtering or to participate in unethical hacking.
Students should NOT use their Chromebook to search Google for terms related to hacking, VPNs, bypassing filters, “unblocked” versions of blocked sites, etc. If a student accidentally accessed a site of this nature, they (or a parent) should let the homeroom teacher or a school administrator know.
Repeated violations will result in disciplinary action that may include restricted access or suspension of Chromebook use.
Parent / Guardian Responsibilities
-
Talk to your children about values and standards that should be followed when using the internet, just as you do on the use of all media information sources such as television, telephones, movies, etc.
-
During registration or other scheduled time, receive necessary information regarding the 1:1 program & sign appropriate forms (examples located in the back of this document).
-
Parents are strongly encouraged to consider doing the following:
-
Have children use Chromebooks in a common area of the home so they can be supervised.
-
Don’t let the student take the Chromebook into their bedrooms at bed time. Keep the device charging in a common area of the home. This prevents them from being online unsupervised.
-
The primary parent will receive an email from Securly (usually weekly) with a summary of student online activity. By creating a parent account on Securly, you can view every detail of online activity (even what they search for on Google). Another feature of a parent account on Securly is that you can tighten student access when they are off-campus.
-
Student Responsibilities
-
Read, understand & follow the LSS Use of the Internet policy 4.406 (link)
-
Use Chromebooks and other technology devices in a responsible and ethical manner.
-
Obey general school rules concerning behavior and communication that applies to Chromebook and technology use.
-
Report malfunctioning, damaged, lost, or stolen Chromebooks immediately to the student’s homeroom teacher or administrator.
-
Secure Chromebooks against loss or theft.
-
Help LSS protect our technology systems/devices by contacting an administrator about any security problems they may encounter (hacking of a device, unauthorized use of a password, etc)
-
Monitor all activity on their account(s) and report suspicious activity to a teacher immediately. Any student can perform their own Google Security Check-Up by visiting https://myaccount.google.com/secureaccount
-
Secure the Chromebook after they are done working to protect their work & information. Securing includes storing out of sight and in a restricted access location such as a locked school locker.
-
If a student receives correspondence/files containing inappropriate/abusive language or if the subject matter is questionable, he/she is asked to inform a teacher immediately.
-
Refrain from plagiarizing works they find on the internet. Plagiarism is taking the ideas or writings of others and presenting them as if they were your own.
-
Respect the rights of copyright owners by not illegally downloading their work.
-
Maintain the Chromebook in good working order.

Fee Structure and Damages
The Chromebook fee ($50) covers a first instance of ACCIDENTAL damage to the Chromebook.
-
Damage caused by negligence (as determined by the school administration) is not covered by the Chromebook Maintenance Fee. The student/parent will be responsible for the cost of repair/replacement.
-
Damage to or loss of power adapters is not covered by the Chromebook Maintenance Fee. Replacement power adapters will be provided at a cost of $45.
A second incident of ACCIDENTAL damage will be covered but a deductible of $50 (or the cost of the damage, whichever is less) must be paid by the student/parent. If the damage is from negligence, the student is responsible for the cost of the repair.
For subsequent incidents of accidental damage, the student/parent is responsible for the full cost of the repair.
Digital Restriction
LSS administration reserves the right to assign discipline based on the severity of the student’s action. Violations of general student behavior policies will be subject to appropriate disciplinary actions.
If a student violates any part of these policies and procedures, his/her behavior will be considered contradictory to the standards/guidelines and at a minimum, appropriate disciplinary action will be taken.
Digital Restriction - One possible disciplinary action is Digital Restriction (DR). Students on DR have their Google accounts and Chromebooks limited to only approved district curriculum and websites. This may result in alternative assignments for those students in certain situations. Teachers are notified when a student is placed on DR. Parents may contact a school administrator if they wish to request their child be placed on DR.
