Dual Enrollment

Dual Enrollment courses are college courses. High school students are enrolled at the postsecondary institution and earn college credit upon successful completion of the course. High school credit and college credit are earned at the same time for the same course.

The Dual Enrollment Grant is one of the Tennessee Education Lottery Scholarships that provides grant funding for dual enrollment tuition. The grant will cover the cost of tuition on your first five classes. For classes 6 - 10, the dual enrollment grant will credit $100 per credit hour, not to exceed $600 per course. 

The University of Memphis offers an institutional grant that will cover any remaining cost of classes 6 - 10, as long as you are grant eligible. 

What does this mean? As long as you remain grant eligible, you can take up to 10 college courses for FREE!

*Students are responsible for the cost of textbooks for each course.

Dual Enrollment credits are accepted at most but not all colleges. It is the responsibility of the student to see if their credits transfer to the college of their choice. This information can be found on college websites by searching for "transfer equivalency tables." After you research whether or not your credits will transfer, see your counselor if you need additional assistance!

Dual Enrollment classes are available for 11th and 12th grade students. You will register with your grade level counselor during course registration.

• Dual enrollment can save time and tuition by providing affordable college credit.
• Dual enrollment courses can help students become accustomed to the high academic standards and rigor of college coursework before living away from home.
• Studies show that dual enrollment students upon graduating from high school are more likely to begin and complete college with higher GPAs.

LPS is currently partnered with the University of Memphis. Students must complete the dual enrollment application through the University of Memphis website in order to take classes.

To take Dual Enrollment courses with the University of Memphis, the admissions requirements are as follows:

• 19 composite score on the ACT
• 18 English sub-score for students taking English Composition
• 18 Math sub-score for students taking College Algebra
• 15 Math sub-score for students taking Probability/Statistics
• 100 admissions index score: 30 times the high school GPA (based on a 4.0 scale) plus the composite ACT score
  • Example: High School GPA of a 2.85 X 30 = 85.5 + 19 = 104.5

Beginning in the 2024-2025 school year, the following dual enrollment courses will be offered at LPS:

• Anatomy/Physiology I & II with Lab (BIOL 2010/2020 - 4 credit hours each)
• Biology of Cells/Organisms with Lab (BIOL 1010/1020 - 4 credit hours each)
• College Algebra/Trigonometry (MATH 1710 and MATH 1720)
• General Psychology (PSYC 1030)
• Intro to Criminal Justice (CJUS 1100)
• Intro to Sociology (SOCI 1030)
• Probability and Statistics (MATH 1530)
• US History until 1877/US History since 1877 (HIST 2021 and HIST 2020)

To be eligible for the TN Dual Enrollment Grant you must meet the following criteria:

• Be a Tennessee resident
• Be classified as a high school junior or senior 
• Complete and submit the Dual Enrollment Grant application online by the deadline indicated below
• Meet admissions criteria for dual enrollment for the postsecondary institution to which the student will enroll in for credit
• Maintain a minimum 2.0 grade point average for all postsecondary courses attempted under the Dual Enrollment Grant

Dual Enrollment Grant Deadlines:

• September 15 - Fall Semester
• February 1 - Spring Semester
• May 15 - Summer Semester

Students will complete the online Dual Enrollment Grant application through the Tennessee Student Assistance Corporation (TSAC) website. It is important that you save your username and password as this website will be used for future scholarship applications and the Tennessee Promise.
